Cork Airport - Sunny Cork 2013

Cork was the sunniest part of the country last year, with July its sunniest month since records began.
The weather station at Cork Airport recorded just over 1,488 sunshine hours over the year, the highest annual total.

Overall, sunshine totals recorded throughout the country were just on or above average, with June and July the sunniest months, according to Met Eireann’s annual summary for 2013.

Almost 265 hours of sunshine were recorded during the month of July at Cork Airport, its sunniest month since records began in 1962.

Most stations recorded their sunniest day of the year between June 7 and 10, with the highest daily sunshine amount — 16 hours — recorded at Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, on both June 7 and 8. These were Ballyshannon’s sunniest days since records began there in 1966.

Both temperature and rainfall levels were near normal throughout the year.

March was the coldest month of the year with mean temperatures 3C below average in most parts of the country.

Dublin Airport reported a mean temperature of 3.1C, its coldest March since the station opened in 1942.

July was the warmest month, with some stations in the west, parts of Dublin, the south-west and midlands experiencing their warmest July in 63 years or more.

The highest temperature last year was 31C recorded at Dooks, Co Kerry, on July 19. It was also the highest annual maximum recorded by the station since 2006.

The weather station in Moorepark, Fermoy, Co Cork, reported its highest annual temperature in 24 years.

Annual rainfall totals were slightly below average everywhere, with November the driest month and December the wettest — some stations had their wettest December in 20 and 24 years.

The highest daily rainfall — 99mm was recorded at Glenmacnass, Co Wicklow on March 21 — its highest March daily fall since records began there in 1965.

Cork Airport recorded its highest mean wind speed in 23 years, at 10.5 knots (19kph) last year. Some stations in the west reported their highest gusts in 10 years.
