Dublin Airport - Passanger Increase

Passenger numbers at Dublin airport increased to 20.2 million last year, the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) financial results for 2013 have revealed.
The increase, of 6%, comes as 70% of the airlines operating at Dublin experienced traffic growth. “Long-haul traffic was Dublin’s best performer last year, with transatlantic passenger numbers up 13% to a record 1.9 million and traffic to the Middle East also up 13%,” DAA chief executive Kevin Toland said. Traffic at Cork declined by 3.5% to 2.3 million passengers last year, due to a consolidation in services to central Europe and weaker traffic routes to Britain.
However, despite the increase in overall passenger numbers, core business profit at DAA decreased by 7% to €26m last year, due to the group’s overseas retail business ARI completing a planned exit from Russia and Ukraine. Last year, Dublin Airport’s transfer passengers increased by 36% to 548,000 and they have increased by a further 30% so far this year.
The DAA plans to grow transfer traffic to 2 million per year. Securing an equitable resolution to the issues facing the multi-employer IAS pension scheme, which includes employees from DAA, Aer Lingus and SRT, was also cited as a key priority for the company. “DAA is actively engaged with the Government appointed Expert Panel investigating the pension issue and we will continue to focus on this critical issue until a sustainable resolution is achieved,” said DAA Chairman Pádraig Ó Ríordáin. The retirement fund has a deficit €780m which means members face reduced benefits.
The accounts show CEO Kevin Toland was paid a total package of €387,739 last year, which included a basic salary of €250,000 and pension contributions and other taxable benefits of €137,739.

Dublin Airport - Dublin Cork Link

The DAA is working to find an airline partner to operate the route. What Cork needs more than anything is a Dublin route, which will strategically connect it to the emerging secondary hub, DAA chief executive Kevin Toland told Airport Business'magazine.

"This route will do more than almost anything we can do to transform Cork's fortunes," he said.

Passenger traffic at Cork airport fell significantly in recent years due to the downturn and the ending of the Cork-Dublin route in 2011. It had been operated at the time by Ryanair, but it was pulled because it was uneconomical.

Dublin Airport - Irish Rugby Team

It was a strange sort of homecoming for anyone flying into Dublin Airports Terminal 2 in the hour before the lions of Paris touched down, with each new arrival met by cheers and choruses of Ireland’s Call sung by more than 1,000 fans who had descended on the airport to welcome the new Six Nations champions home. A man with impressive facial hair came through the sliding doors.

“It’s Gordon Darcy and his beard” came a shout from the crowd. A great cheer went up as the man blushed and looked bemused. Then the singing started again. “Ole, Ole Ole” this time. “Ah would ya stop, that’s for the soccer,” someone shouted. The crowd sang it anyway and added a chorus of You’ll Never Beat The Irish for good measure. For once it was true. The Irish team’s appearance with the trophy was a long time coming but when captain Paul O’Connell eventually led his squad through arrivals an hour behind schedule, the roar could have drowned out the engine of a jumbo jet.

The scrum around the battered and bruised players as they signed autographs and shook hands was more powerful than anything the French had been able to muster in yesterday’s heart-stoppingly close encounter

Dublin Airport - SIPTU Industrial Action

SIPTU has served notice of industrial action on Aer Lingus, the Dublin Airport Authority and the Shannon Airport Authority. The trade union said this notice followed the refusal of the companies to engage in meaningful talks or to present reasonable or fair proposals during discussions in recent days.

Discussions had been aimed at resolving the pensions crisis.

A four hour work stoppage at Dublin, Cork and Shannon Airports will take place from 5am to 9am on Friday, March 14.

SIPTU said its representatives remain available if the companies wish to enter discussions that could lead to a resolution of the pensions crisis.

Dublin Airport - Strike Fears

Employees attached to Siptu at Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) have overwhelmingly voted in favour of strike action due to an on-going dispute over the DAA’s pension fund.
Staff have been in dispute with management for some years as to how to restructure the pension fund. The Irish Aviation Superannuation Scheme (IAAS), which covers workers in the DAA, Shannon Airport and Aer Lingus, has a deficit of around €780 million.

Ninety-four per cent of those participating in a ballot voted in favour of industrial action, with 89 per cent specifying a preference for strike action, and 81 per cent looking for contributions to the pension scheme to stop.
The result of a similar ballot at Aer Lingus will be announced tomorrow.
The dispute over the shortfall in the pension scheme has been running for a number of years. The matter went to the Labour Court in January 2013 following a prior threat of industrial action by staff.

Dublin Airport - Passsenger Increase

Passenger numbers at Dublin Airport increased by six per cent to 20.2 million last year, as an extra 1.1 million people used the airport. The significant growth in passenger numbers was led by a record-breaking performance on transatlantic traffic, which saw a 13 per cent increase during 2013.

As a result of the strong growth in passenger numbers, Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) is paying a E5.6 million rebate in airport charges to a total of 40 airlines that increased their business at Dublin Airport during 2013.

Dublin Airport welcomes Emirates announcement  to fly double daily on its non-stop flight to Dubai from 1st September this year.  The extra return flight will add more than 5,000 seats a week in both directions.

Dublin Airport - Passenger Number Increase

Passenger numbers at Dublin Airport increased by 6 per cent to 20.2 million last year, as an extra 1.1 million people used the airport. The increase was driven by a 13 per cent record-breaking jump in transatlantic traffic.

On the back of such strong passenger numbers, the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has disclosed that it will pay a €5.6 million rebate in airport charges to a total of 40 airlines that grew Dublin Airport business in 2013 under the Growth Incentive Scheme. This scheme has been extended until 2016.

“Dublin Airport had an excellent performance last year,” said Vincent Harrison, managing director of Dublin Airport. “Passenger numbers increased across all areas of the business and Dublin Airport’s growth outperformed the European average in every month of 2013.”

Dublin Airport - Farwells

Tears of joy that had been on display at Dublin Airport in the run-up to Christmas returned to tears of sorrow today as emigrants returned to their adopted homes after the holidays.

A man in his 60s strode away from the departure gates fighting back tears as his son headed towards the gate. A few moments later, the father returned to stand beside his wife who was waiting for the final wave.

They held on to each other and stood in silence as the young man went through the doors.

There were lots of hugs and kisses at the departure gates before Maeve and John Hardiman let their family go. Their son Niall was returning to Chicago with his wife Katie and children Johnny (3) and Nina (4 months). “We’ll see them in the summer, hopefully,” said John. “And there’s Skype. Thank God for it. It’s just wonderful.”

Dublin Airport - Victoria's Secret

VS is the latest brand to join The Loops arsenal of shops in Dublin Airport. VS is one of these super brands that rakes it in but does so with zero advertising (yes, zero) and zero PR. Yep, you heard me – zero. Its popularity and cachet seems to revolve solely around its biannual fashion shows, where supermodels parade up and down a very fancy runway wearing underwear that you can’t buy in the stores.

For a full list of items and prices, check out the online shop at the Loop – you can only shop if you have a flight booked, and you must order 24 hours in advance of departure.
As an added bonus, enormous TV screens beam scenes from the latest Victoria’s Secret shows out to customers in the shop and those awaiting flights in the main lobby – just don’t come in asking for Miranda Kerr’s bikini.
